Do one thing, or fix one problem.
Each guide answers one question in a few steps. The docs cover each action as a single reference card.
How to
- Set a track's input from your iPad or Android tabletFree
Turn on Show Input in Mixer strip layout to pick inputs on the mixer strips, or use Track Setup for many tracks at once. Outputs are not supported yet.
- Give every band member their own monitor mixFree
Each musician installs the free app on their phone or tablet, connects to your REAPER, taps SoF and picks their monitor bus. Their faders then ride their sends.
- Pin the master or any track to the edge of the mixerFree
Long-press a track name to open Track Setup and tap the pin next to a track. It stays at the mixer edge on every layer while the other strips scroll.
- Use your phone or tablet as a REAPER remote controlFree
Three ways to control REAPER from a phone or tablet: the Web Remote built into REAPER, an OSC app like TouchOSC, or MixSurface. Setup for each.
- Show only the tracks that are visible in REAPER's mixerFree
Tap Visible in the mixer's top bar and choose Follow REAPER's mixer. The ALL layer then shows only the tracks REAPER's mixer shows.
- Make a button for any REAPER action, custom action or scriptFree, some steps need the unlock
Run the action in REAPER while MixSurface listens. Add it to a toolbar for free, or to a Control View page with the unlock. Works for scripts too.
- Clean up a plugin's auto-generated layoutNeeds the unlock
Tap Edit on the plugin's Generic view, then keep the detected layout and trim it, or start fresh and add only the controls you touch in REAPER.
- Jump between markers and regions, and queue the next songFree, some steps need the unlock
Tap a marker or region on the ruler to jump there. Open the region drawer to pick from a list, and long-press a region to play it after the current song.
- Control item FX (take FX) from your iPad or Android tabletNeeds the unlock
In Arrange, tap the FX badge on an item. Channel Detail opens on that item's FX chain, where you add, bypass and tweak plugins as on a track.
- Add a loudness and metering page to Control ViewNeeds the unlock
In Control View, add a page From template and pick Mastering metering or Mixing metering: LUFS, true peak, spectrum, spectrogram, stereo cloud, phase and VU.
- Use several phones and tablets with one REAPERFree
Connect each device to the same REAPER on its own. Mixer moves, layers, pins, templates and pages are shared; settings and toolbar choices stay per device.
- Ride faders smoothly on a phone or tabletFree
Touch anywhere on the fader and drag; it never jumps. Move slowly for finer steps, turn on Fine for half-speed drags, and use Touch or Latch to write the ride.
- Use MixSurface as a layer switcher for a hardware controllerFree
Build layers in the free mixer and set Visible to Drive REAPER's mixer. Each layer tap narrows REAPER's mixer for a controller that follows it.
- Move, line up and resize controls on a pageNeeds the unlock
In edit mode, press and hold a control, then drag it. Guides line it up with its neighbours; Slot size in its settings makes it bigger or smaller.
- Change a control's type, label, colour and value readoutNeeds the unlock
In edit mode, tap the control. Its settings sheet lets you switch it between knob, fader, button and more, and set its label, colour and readout.
- Group controls into a labelled sectionNeeds the unlock
In edit mode, tap an empty spot and choose New Section. Name it, pick a colour, then add controls into it. The section moves as one block.
- Add a track level meter or a gain-reduction meterNeeds the unlock
In edit mode, tap an empty spot and choose Meter from track… to watch tracks, or GR Meter to show a compressor's gain reduction.
- Make a layout fit a phone, a tablet and both orientationsNeeds the unlock
A page repacks itself to fit each screen. To arrange one size by hand, edit on that screen and tap Done; MixSurface saves a layout for that width.
- Make fine adjustments with Fine mode and focus zoomFree, some steps need the unlock
Tap Fine in the top bar to halve how far every drag moves a value. Double-tap a template knob or fader to zoom its range for exact settings.
- Re-bind a control to a different parameter or trackNeeds the unlock
In edit mode, tap the control and tap Re-bind…, then touch the right parameter in REAPER. A meter opens the track picker instead.
- Add, rename, reorder and share Control View pages across projectsNeeds the unlock
Tap + on the page rail for a new page. Long-press the rail to rename, colour, reorder or delete pages, or switch a page's Scope to Global.
- Put plugin parameters from several tracks on one Control View pageNeeds the unlock
In Control View, tap Edit, tap an empty spot and choose From listen. Each parameter you touch in REAPER lands on the page as a bound knob.
- Ride a reverb or bus send from every fader with Sends on FaderFree
Tap SoF in the top bar and pick a bus. Every fader now sets that track's send to the bus; touch a faded strip to create its send.
- Add, ride and remove one track's sends in Channel DetailNeeds the unlock
Open the track in Channel Detail and switch the rail to SENDS. Each send is a strip; tap + to add one, long-press its footer to remove it.
- Mix a reverb or monitor bus from its receivesNeeds the unlock
Open the bus in Channel Detail, switch the rail to SENDS, then tap RECEIVES. Every track feeding the bus shows as a strip you can balance.
Fix a problem
- The Unlock button does nothing or says Check againFree
Your device has in-app purchases turned off. On iOS, allow In-app Purchases under Screen Time, then tap Check again on the unlock screen.
- Faders ignore automation or won't snap back in TouchFree
Check the global automation override first: tap Auto and choose No override. Then set each track's mode from its automation badge. In Trim the fader shows trim.
- Listen mode doesn't pick up a parameter or actionNeeds the unlock
Touch the control in the same plugin instance the page is for, save the REAPER project for a project page, and keep the listen sheet open while you touch.
- Install the extension into a portable REAPERFree
Copy the extension file into the UserPlugins folder of your portable REAPER. On macOS use the portable .dmg; on Linux pass the folder to install.sh.
- Install the MixSurface extension on LinuxFree
Download the Linux build (x86_64 or ARM64), unpack it and run install.sh, then restart REAPER and add MixSurface under Control / OSC / web. Needs glibc 2.35.
- Connect over a USB cable instead of Wi-FiFree
Plug the phone or tablet into the computer running REAPER. The cable shows up as a wired network connection and MixSurface finds REAPER on it, no Wi-Fi needed.
- Choose a tablet for MixSurfaceFree
Try the free mixer on the phone you have first. Bigger screens give more strips. Avoid budget Android tablets whose touchscreens miss slow, small finger moves.
Overviews
- Build your own plugin template
Replace a plugin's Generic layout with your own: pick the parameters, set their types and sizes, and arrange them across pages.
- Build your own control surfaces
Build pages of faders, knobs, buttons and meters, each bound to a plugin parameter, a REAPER action or a track.
- Ride your sends
Sends on Fader turns the mixer into a monitor-mix desk. Channel Detail sets up one track's sends, or mixes a bus from its receives.
